MTV BASE LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR NEW VJ STAR

Tweet About it: “Are you the new face of @mtvbaseafrica? Check out VJ auditions in Durban & Cape Town on 14 July & Jo’burg on 21 July #BaseVJSearch”

Johannesburg, 26 June 2012: MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) is looking for a talented newcomer to become the new VJ (video jockey or TV presenter) for the legendary youth entertainment channel.  To track down the TV star of the future, MTV Base talent scouts are to hold auditions in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg in July 2012, with one lucky winner walking away with a dream job in entertainment.

The new VJ will become one of the key faces of the music network, hosting programmes on MTV Base as well as interviewing stars, MC-ing entertainment events, walking the red carpet and travelling all over the continent.

Celebrity judges analyzing the contestants on their potential to be an MTV VJ will be SABC Live presenter Bonang Matheba, Hip-Hop star HHP, TV presenter and DJ Azania Mosaka and MTV Creative Director Tim Horwood.

Commented Bonang Matheba, “I am so excited to be a judge in the 2012 MTV Base VJ Search.  It's tough to break into the entertainment business, so this is a fantastic opportunity. I started my own TV career at the tender age of 15 so I know how much raw, untapped talent is out there just waiting to be found... I know we're going to find someone out of this world!”

MTV Base’s new VJ will be following in the footsteps of veteran MTV Base VJ Sizwe Dhlomo (@SizweDhlomo) who won MTV Base’s first ever VJ search in 2005.  Aged just 21, Sizwe gave up a promising career as a computer programmer to step into the limelight with MTV Base. Since winning the contest, Dhlomo has become a well-known face on the South African music and entertainment scene, and has gone on to present many shows on MTV Base including MTV Base's coverage of the MTV Europe Music Awards, MTV Base Uncensored, Player, MTV Base Meets with MTN, MTV Making the Video and many others.  Along the way, the shy young Durbanite has been transformed into a confident and polished entertainment professional who travels the world covering MTV events and interviewing heads of state and entertainment icons such as Akon, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Sean Paul.  Aside from presenting TV series and events for MTV Base, Sizwe has also presented programmes on SABC and e.TV and become an in-demand radio DJ and MC, as well as a restaurateur.

“This has got to be the best gig in TV,” commented Sizwe Dhlomo, “Winning the first MTV Base VJ Search totally changed my life and it’s great that we are offering the same opportunity to new kids on the block who want to get their break into the entertainment business.”

“A passion for youth culture, an engaging personality and lots of energy and confidence are just some of the key attributes that we are looking for,” commented Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa. “But the most important quality required in an MTV Base VJ is that they should have the ability to communicate with and connect to our audience.”

The MTV Base VJ Search auditions will kick off simultaneously in Durban and Cape Town at 9:00 am on Saturday 14 July, before moving onto Johannesburg on 21 July.   Registration opens at 9:00 am in each location.  Auditions will be on a first come, first served basis so applicants are encouraged to arrive early.

The MTV Base VJ Search is open to South Africans aged between 18-25, who speak fluent English and who have a clean criminal record.  Prior presenting or TV experience is not required.  Applicants must be available to participate in the elimination phases of the competition between 24-28 July 2012.   For full terms and conditions, or to download the registration form, please go to www.mtvbase.com and follow the links to the MTV Base VJ Search page.

The MTV Base VJ Search will air weekly on MTV Base from Tuesday 7 August 2012.  The Grand Final will take place in October 2012.

Metro FM is the official radio partner of the MTV Base VJ Search.   Heat, Drum, Sunday World and The Sowetan are the official print partners.
