Stadium
Estádio la Luz, Lisbon, Portugal
Capacity
65,000
Song
(sung in Portuguese)
I’m from Benfica / It fills me with pride /I have in me the spirit / That allows common greatness /
I’m from a brave club / That in the hardest of the battles / A rival has never met / In this Portugal of ours /
Being from Benfica / Is having in your soul / The mighty flame / That conquers /
It lifts you to the immense light / From the sun, that high in the sky / Smiling gently kisses / Full of pride /
The very bright shirts / Vibrating through the fields / Like jumping poppies
Meaning
Recognizes Benfica’s humble beginnings and is intended to represent that being a fan of Benfica (a Benfiquista) entails more than being a soccer fan.
History
First sung on April 16, 1953, at a concert to raise money to build the Benfica stadium, the Stadium of Light. “Ser Benfiquista” was composed by Paulino Gomes Junior and sung by the tenor Luis Piçarra. It is sung at the start of every home game and sometimes during the game.
A Fan Says
“We sing with pride and emotion. While some clubs had everything handed to them on a plate, Benfica had to play on borrowed pitches and the players had cold-water showers and bad equipment. And despite all that, they prevailed, proving that talent, bravery and union are all that you need. That’s being a Benfiquista. It’s a club that began as a dream of a few humble people and today is the passion of millions around the world.” — Ricardo Costa, 32
