Bellator 41 (4/16/11)

4-16-11 - Bellator 41

Catchweight Fight (137): Joe Warren (6-1) vs. Marcos Galvao (9-3-1)
MY PICK – Joe Warren via decision
WINNER - Joe Warren via decision

Pre-Fight Notes:  Warren has won four fights in a row, and seems to be looking really good at the moment. Three of those four have went to the judges however as he has proven to love the long fights. He did knockout his last opponent however, just for the record. He is the current featherweight champion at age 34 however. Galvao is the Ring of Combat Featherweight Champion, so this is definitely a super fight of sorts.  Galvao has won three in a row and he also has a habit of going to the judges. His jaw has proven that he can be knocked out however. In this one, I think we are gonna see a dominant performance by Joe Warren, but a decision win.

Post-Fight Notes: Galvao starts round one off with a takedown on Warren. Galvao just starts punching away and it looked like he was about to get a quick win, but Warren gets out. Galvao scores a knee to the gut and then lands another takedown after Warren tried to take him down. They get back up and Warren tries to land some knees, but is tripped down for a third time. At the end of the round Warren landed some punches and a takedown. This first round is for Galvao easily. Warren starts off round two with some great shots. Both men are scoring big shots in the clinch, but it seems Galvao is scoring more. Galvao got another takedown on Warren. They stood again and Galvao landed some great solid knees. Warren gets another takedown but eats some great shots as the round ends. Galvao took round two and looks to be winning this fight. After taking some shots Warren started off round three with a takedown. He almost got caught in a submission, but they stand. Warren gets another takedown, but Galvao landed some solid elbows from the bottom. Galvao is fighting one hell of a fight. Warren took some more shots after standing and then Warren dropped Galvao against the cage and closed with some amazing punches to end the fight. Ill give Warren round three, but he still loses the fight in my book 29-28. The judges score this fight 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 for Joe Warren? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? I cannot believe what I just saw! Judge Chuck Wolf scored the fight 30-27! I cannot believe this mess. FIRE CHUCK WOLF is the stance I am taking now! Joe Warren is extremely overrated, because he just lost this fight. I don't care what anyone says, he just lost this fight.

Bantamweight Fight: Zach Makovsky (12-2) vs. Chad Robichaux (11-0)
MY PICK - Zach Makovsky via decision
WINNER - Zach Makovsky via TKO (3-2:02)

Pre-Fight Notes:  Makovsky is obviously the bantamweight champion for Bellator. He has looked real good in the early portion of his career as he has won six straight fights. He has went to decisions in his last three fights, but has the ability to tap anyone out. Chad has never been defeated and also has a great submission game as he has submitted 10 people in his career. I think he will try his ass off to get the submission in this fight, but will fail as it reaches the judges.

Post-Fight Notes: Makovsky started the fight off with a takedown. He landed some ground and pound and then gets another takedown after they stood up. After standing up again, Makovsky lands a solid left hand and then gets another takedown. Makovsky basically dominated round one like a champ should. Makovsky started off round two with a great shot and then another takedown. Both men landed alot of shots on the bottom. With a minute left, Makovski lands another takedown and lands some more solid ground and pound. In the third round, Makovski gets a takedown and attempts a few submissions. Makovski begins to land punches and give up the submissions. He just blasts him far too much and the fight has to be stopped.

Bellator Featherweight Tournament Seminfinals: Patricio Freire (15-1) vs. Wilson Reis (12-2)
MY PICK – Patricio Freire via TKO
WINNER - Patricio Freire via KO (3-3:29)

Pre-Fight Notes:  We got a great fight here without a doubt. Freire lost in the finals of the last tournament to Joe Warren, so we already know that he is focused on winning this tournament this year. I think he is ready to take this tournament all the way as he got a TKO in his last fight. Reis fought his ass off in the last tournament until he lost to who? Patricio Freire by decision and thats exactly what I believe is about to happen again. However, this time, Freire is going to get the finish. I expect this one to be the fight of the night.

Post-Fight Notes:  They start the fight going back and forth until Freire lands a solid kick to the face. Freire ended up getting the first takedown of the night. After standing, Freire lands some very solid blows as does Reis as the round ends in the first, which went to Freire in my book. Freire got a takedown after Reis tried to take him down. They stand up and Freire lands a knee to his gut right before the bell. Freire took round two as well and has a commanding lead going into the third round. Reis cracks him with a head kick to start off round three. Freire then lands some great combos on Reis and just looks like his striking is on point tonight. Freire is just landing right after right and finally drops Reis. The punches were vicious and this was a knockout win for Freire. Wow, what a performance in this fight! He looked great!

Bellator Featherweight Tournament Semifinals: Kenny Foster (9-2) vs. Daniel Straus (15-3)
MY PICK - Daniel Straus via decision
WINNER - Daniel Straus via submission (3-3:48)

Pre-Fight Notes:  Regardless of who wins this fight, I think they will lose in the finals to Mr. Freire, who seems destined for his rematch with Warren. With that being said, this should still be a great fight. Foster has won two in a row and has a pretty solid submission game. Straus however has won eleven fights in a row and sees the judges a lot. This will probably be a back and forth technical war that sees the judges. I gotta go with Straus.

Post-Fight Notes:  Straus started the fight off with an aggressive rush and toss to the ground. They stand and throw some very aggressive strikes before Straus is able to toss Foster again. Straus then lands a flying knee followed up with a takedown. This was a very dominant round for Straus as he takes round one. Foster starts round two with an uppercut to the gut of Straus that seems to hurt him. He then followed it up with a knee. Straus then landed a superman punch and a takedown. With ten seconds left in the round, Straus landed a great left hook and takedown to win the round in my book. Straus was up two rounds to none going into the third round. With three minutes left in the fight, Straus gets the takedown. Straus landed some great ground and pound to the ribs and then tries a few different submission holds. Despite both men being very sweaty and slippery, Straus was able to wrench on a guillotine and get the submission. This was a dominant performance for Straus.

Heavyweight Fight: Rudy Aguilar (0-1) vs. Carlos Flores (4-0)
MY PICK - Carlos Flores via submission
WINNER -  Carlos Flores via TKO (1-1:19)

Pre-Fight Notes:  Flores has seemed pretty solid so far in his career. It was rumored that he was to fight Tony Johnson, and I think he would have lost that fight. However, this fight against the basic rookie should be much easier. I think Flores will show us his submission ability and get the win here.

Post-Fight Notes: Flores landed some huge knees and rocked Aguilar early. Flores then landed a variety of strikes and drops Aguilar. Hammer Fist follow and the fight is over. Wow, that was easy!

Bantamweight Fight: Anthony Birchak (4-0) vs. Tyler Bialecki (7-3)

MY PICK  -Anthony Birchak via decision
WINNER - Anthony Birchak via submission (1-4:06)

Pre-Fight Notes: Birchak has submitted each and everyone of his four opponents. Tyler has a great ground game too and I think both men will put on a grappling exhibition here. However, I think that Birchak will stay undefeated as he pulls it out........by decision.

Post-Fight Notes: This was exactly what I thought it would be...A back and forth grappling show. Birchak gets in a Brabo Choke. Bialecki tried to fight it, but had no choice but to tap out. This tied my prediction record to 1-1 for the night.

Featherweight Fight: Michael Parker (6-3) vs. Nick Piedmont (4-1)
MY PICK - Michael Parker via decision
WINNER - Nick Piedmont via split decision

Pre-Fight Notes: Parker has won two fights in a row and seems to have a pretty solid ground game. Piedmont has a habit of seeing the judges and this one should be exactly the same way. I gotta go with Parker via decision here. Should be a pretty boring fight to be honest.

Post-Fight Notes: They started the fight by just throwing some amazing strikes until Parker drops Nick Piedmont with a great left hook. They stood back up and Parker landed some very strong strikes to finish off round #1 and I believe Parker got round one in this one. Round two started off with Parker landing some great shots as Piedmont kept trying to take him down. Parker gassed out and Piedmont landed some solid punches. Due to gassing out and taking some solid shots, I gave round two to Piedmont. This was a very close second round. Parker was still very tired in the third round, which is could easily cost him this fight. Parker kept catching Piedmonts kicks throughout this entire fight and he did in the third again and dropped him with a left hand. They end up standing again and Parker is bleeding from his nose. They two fighters just start landing punches as the round comes to an end. Parker seemed to have gotten the best and thats why I give him round three and the fight. The officials scores were 29-28 Piedmont twice and 30-27 for Parker...What the hell is wrong with these judges? They just gave the fight to Piedmont via split decision. All three of the judges had stupid ass scores. This was just bullshit. However, the fight was great and probably going to be fight of the night. My prediction record just started off 0-1.

Middleweight Fight: Brendan Tierney (6-2) vs. Dano Moore (5-4)
MY PICK - NONE
WINNER - Brendan Tierney via submission (1-0:49)

Post Fight Notes: This fight didn't take long at all. In the beginning, they circled and then Moore dropped Tierney with a left hook. Tierney recovered and then took Moore down. Tierney locks in an armbar and gets the submission. Wow, that shit was quick! Great jiu-jitsu by Mr. Tierney in this fight.

Overall Card Comments: I think this fight has some quality main card fights, but once again, the undercard looks like cooked crap. I hope I am wrong...

POST SHOW Comments: This show was weak in my book. The undercard fights seemed more exciting, but that's just my opinion...Joe Warren is officially overrated.
