The king of mugithi JB Maina is suing the multi national telecommunication company
Safaricom for the use of his songs like ‘Ni sorry muno, Tiga kumute’ and ‘Mundia tawe’as ringtones through their surf and win skiza promotion without his consent.
The mugithi king claims that his CDs and DVDs sale has drastically reduced since Safaricom started selling his songs for as low as Shs 5 bob.
According to the Nairobi Law Monthly, Safaricom claims that they signed a content provision agreement with Interactive Media Services and Liberty Afrika Technologies to make all payments necessary for licenses and rights because they (Safaricom) don’t deal with artistes directly.
The artiste is awaiting a court date from Milimani commercial courts even as Safaricom claims that they paid Liberty Afrika all that is due to JB Maina
