BEIJING ; The torch relay for this year's 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou will not venture outside the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, organisers have said.
The torch for the last Asian Games in Qatari capital Doha in 2006 travelled 50,000 kilometres through 13 countries and 23 cities in Asia.
The relay for the last big sports event held in China, Beijing Olympics, was even more ambitious but became a focus for violent anti-Chinese protests, particularly in the U.S. and Europe. By contrast, the Guangzhou relay will be confined to 21 major cities in Guangdong before arriving in the provincial capital for the opening of the Nov. 12-27 Games, which will host more than 14,000 athletes and officials from 45 Asian countries.
